Governor Greg Abbott has appointed Leonard Peters as judge of the 492nd District Court in Colorado County and Lavaca County. The appointment was announced August 24, 2026 and takes effect September 1, 2026, for a term set to expire December 31, 2028.

The 492nd District Court is one of the district courts the Legislature created effective September 1, 2026, so Peters is its first judge.

About the judge

Leonard Peters of Columbus has served as municipal judge for the City of Columbus while practicing with Peters and Peters Law Firm. He earned both his undergraduate degree in criminal justice and his law degree at the University of Houston, holds a Texas peace officer's license, and is a member of the Colorado County Bar Association and a past president of the Columbus Chamber of Commerce.
